Dirt Bike Adventure at Clear Creek Management Area
Nestled in the rugged terrain of the Diablo Range in Central California, Clear Creek Management Area (CCMA) offers an exhilarating dirt biking experience. With its unique serpentine landscape, challenging trails, and breathtaking vistas, CCMA is a haven for off-road enthusiasts. One popular destination within this area is the Jade Mill Campground, providing a convenient basecamp for adventure seekers.
Getting to Clear Creek Management Area and Jade Mill Campground
Clear Creek Management Area is located approximately 35 miles south of Hollister, CA. Here are directions to reach Jade Mill Campground:
From Hollister, take CA-25 south for approximately 25 miles.
Turn left onto Coalinga Road and continue for about 10 miles.
Turn right into Clear Creek Road. Follow signs to the Jade Mill Campground.
The campground is primitive, offering minimal amenities, so be sure to bring enough water, food, and supplies for your visit.
Trail Riding Opportunities
CCMA boasts a wide variety of trails for all skill levels. From wide dirt roads for beginners to narrow, rocky paths for seasoned riders, there's something for everyone. Popular trails include:
Ridge Trail: A scenic ride along the ridge with panoramic views of the surrounding hills.
Joaquin Rocks Trail: A technical trail leading to the iconic Joaquin Rocks formation.
Serpentine Loop: A must-ride loop that showcases the area's unique geology.
Restrictions and Regulations
Due to its serpentine soils, which contain naturally occurring asbestos, CCMA is subject to specific restrictions:
Permit Requirement: A permit from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is required for entry.
Seasonal Access: The area is typically open from mid-April to mid-October, depending on weather conditions.
Asbestos Safety: The BLM advises wearing protective gear, including a mask, to minimize asbestos exposure.
Vehicle Restrictions: Only street-legal or registered off-highway vehicles (OHVs) are allowed.
Camping Regulations: Camping is permitted only in designated areas, such as Jade Mill Campground.
Safety Tips and Environmental Considerations
Always ride with a buddy and carry a communication device.
Stay on designated trails to protect the fragile ecosystem.
Respect wildlife and other visitors to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
Clear Creek Management Area offers a unique and exciting dirt biking adventure amidst striking geological features. Plan your trip, follow the regulations, and enjoy the thrill of riding through this captivating landscape.

To get to the area use Google maps to Clear Creek Management Area, then go past the management area, after Oak Flat Campground there is a split in the road to go to the river on the right or continue on the road, keep going on the road to get to Jade Mill Campground, there is one trail marker to you see on the left side of the road on the way up, park any where in the camp ground, and then find the area before the gate to take the trail near by the gate. You might need a reservation from recreation.gov for the gate locks to get past if needed for the additional areas. The area has NO cell service.
